2009: the clock is ticking

happy-new-yearsHow many more for you?

check this out

REMEMBER, IT IS JUST A WEBSITE. IF YOU HAVE SERIOUS CONCERNS SEE YOU DR ASAP.

The site seems designed to encourage people to give up smoking and lose weight, and has links to a range of health-related articles covering everything from ADD to workplace health.

It’s a great website to check out at this time of year. Most of us think about our health as we begin a new year, and around our nation various Another area of life the Clock reminds us about, albeit lightheartedly, is the difference that our attitude makes. According to the Clock, I lose 33 years if I adopt a pessimistic approach to life…

More and more research is being done on mind-body

connections and the effect a positive outlook on life has for our physical health.

My result? 99 years.

End of Year Catch Up

28, December 2008 · 1 Comment

with so many bloggers on holiday I can finally get my google reader under control; hopefully lowering the 1000+ to zero before the new year. That’s my goal.

Also I am sorting my Laptop Picture and Document files, setting up the 2009 ones:  ready to go.

Christmas and mum’s Birthday came and went quite smoothly. The decsions I made to assist myself through those days without mum worked well.  Sure do miss her though.

I am all unpacked, here at my new home, just 2 boxes to go but I am not sure where to put the contents. So I am in thinking mode re that.

We bought new tomatoe plants which are already in, and a tray of lettuces, I will plant them later today when the sun moves acoss to the west a little more.  We had a tropical style rainstorm (with amazing lightening)  yesterday afternoon and now today have the normal blue sky and sunshine of Queensland.

It was great to have all the family visit, and they helped us get through more ham and turkey. All our visitors of the last week have loved the place and it truely feels like home.

Infact, Santa left a package under the tree with the letters H O M E, in it. I took a photograph, when I find where I loaded it I will place it here.

I continue to read and learn anout India.

I am involved in a FB group with Indian University Alumni.  Mt title?  ’Community Organiser’, plus with the admin role I am able to work with newbies to FB. The group is growing and the content getting a touch more of the ‘adda’ BB wants.

Made some great new friends though this role and enjoy the depth and breadth of the discussions and chats.

I continue with the beautiful ladies (plus Les) in the Victoria Group. They have been a delight all year, so supportive and informative.  While I swelter here, they are mostly under snow and ice, therefore discussing soups etc. Very strange.

I have had a great year reading some special Blogs and getting to know some great people through them.

I moved my Blog to WordPress and love it.

I have been learning more about my camera and seem to have mastered (well, learnt how to) macro. Next is night shots. When I find the book. A flash of insight about 40 minutes ago will be checked into as soon as I post this.

All the TNG’s are growing up fast. #6 will turn 1 soon, and is already walking. She looked great in her purple striped dress top and purple leggings! So chic.  TNG# 5 (begining the talking process, and has 4 wonderful teeth) was fab in Pink, like her mum, whom she adores.  TNG’s #1,2, & 3 were a total delight.  I am impressed with all they know. TNG #1 is reading beautifully. S-I-L took some great photos, while enjoying my camera.

The cricket has been interesting. C’mon Aussie! Can we do it? Yes we can…uh oh that the new Mr President’s line.

‘…the shepherds said one to another,

Let us now go even unto Bethlehem,

and see this thing which is come to pass,

which the Lord hath made known unto us.’

‘And the shepherds returned,

glorifying and praising God

for all the things that they had heard and seen,

as it was told unto them.’

Luke 2: 15 & 20

may the season be safe, and happy for you and yours.

Although not a traditional Australian Christmas flower

we could not go past these at the market this morning,

Avid readers of ‘Victoria’ will be familiar with Peonies.

Blog Advent Tour: 23rd December

22, December 2008 · 7 Comments

margs-blog-advent-cal1

thanks to Marg & Kailana

for giving us this great tour.

The blogs have been fantastic…

with just 2 sleeps to go I thought I’d share some thoughts about

Christmas in Australia.

roo11

Some key ingredients are required:

Heat,

did I say heat?

oh I meant H E A T!

And a few flies…

an increasing hot wind, and the potential for a storm and rain (which will occurr at the worst possible time no matter where you are or what you are doing)

Children up early, cicadas singing;  just so we know it’s going to be a stinking hot day.

Brekkie on the verandah: coco pops, bacon eggs toast, fresh mango, juices, spilt of course.

Relax for 10 mins before the turkey has to be stuffed and the vegetables prepared.

Kids riding bikes or whatever new form of kiddie-transport is the in thing. Up and down the street, the howls when they fall, crash or can’t stop/get off.

‘Relees’ arriving for lunch wearing horrible outfits.  Bringing their annual offering of whatever

“Mum you said Auntie Shirl wasn’t gonna make mince pies this year”.

“Oh mum, do we have to eat Auntie Phoebe’s pudding? It’s disgusting”.

A mad scramble for each and every chair in the house, or garden.

“Mum can you get Uncle Rod to stop telling me I’m cute”

“Mum I am not sitting next to Cousin Wayne, he reeks of grog…”

“Steve put some music on love will ya”?

“Aw mum she broke it”

Mum and her helpers are dripping sweat in a still un air-conditioned kitchen

(Next year Luv, I promise)

The kids are at the little tables and the adults at the big one. Covered with butchers paper and

red wrapping paper down the middle, the tables that is not the guests. But hey give them time.

Matching paper serviettes. Green paper plates and plastic cups. Gold crackers. Ya gotta have crackers.

Enter the food:

prawns

turkey

mountains of roasted veggies

a plate of greens

ham

gravy

salads

cranberry sauce (the youngsters like this new fangled stuff)

Sweltering in close to 40 degrees. Everyone hoping for a breeze.

“Mum can’t we bring the fans outside?”

Ah, here comes the traditional Christmas pudding.

Fruity and heavy, just what over full stomachs need.

Hot custard poured thick and a dollop of King Island Cream.

“I know what the Doc said luv, but it’s Christmas”.

“Time for the Queen’s message”.

“Mum I’m hungry”

“Mumm she hit me. “

“Mum, mum Uncle George is telling that joke”.

Mum mum mum!

This scene can be relocated to the beach:

beach

This is proposed about mid November as an attempt to lessen mum’s load

(but it’s really to add cricket to the day)

Everyone out of the car…

“Who has the wickets?”

“Aw I don’t want to be Ponting. I wanna be Johnson”.

and to the above ingredients you will need to add:

sand

more flies

sand

salt water

sand

and flies.

Maybe some seaweed.

Overheated kids, and sticky 30+ sunscreen. Hats, towells, water toys, buckets spades, aerogurard.

Did I mention flapping umbrellas and sand on the blanket, in the food. Uncle Joe sprained his ankle bowling

and Jenny wants to bat again coz she wasn’t ready.  Emma is mortified to be seen by school friends.

Don’t forget the Stingoes for the bites…

and well there you have it: a great Australian Christmas.

I will be having a relaxed pleasant breakfast in air condtioning with just 3 friends. and one cat.

I will rest and watch DVDs all day. Make and recieve some phone calls.

Pehaps eat a sandwich in the middle of the day. Or stone fruit?

Then sensibly dressed,  with a touch of glamour I will travel to a local resturant

therein eating food bought cooked and served by someone else.

While they slave over the dishes, the valet parking service will return the car.

A brief journey home. A rest to digest, then a leisurley dip in the pool.

For me though whilst all this is fun, or not.

The day will be poignant as I contmeplate the birth of Jesus Christ.

and celebrating without my mother. For the first time.

May Your Christmas Be Merry and Bright.

and safe..above all safe.

A story to gladden your heart…

rotating_gold_dollar_sign

A BRITON who lent $11 to a cash-strapped Australian while travelling through Europe has had his loan repaid – nearly 40 years later, a report said.

Jim Webb, 72, was in the Belgian coastal town of Ostend in April 1969 with a friend when he met Gary Fenton who asked for a loan to pay for a ferry journey back to Britain.

Mr Fenton promised to repay Mr Webb and noted down his address when the trio landed in England.

Last Sunday Mr Webb returned to his home in Sheffield to find a hand-delivered package with $439 - $11 for each year the loan had not been paid – and a note that read: “To Jim Webb, a good man. From Gary Fenton, a tardy payer of debts.”

“I was quite emotional when I read it,” Mr Webb told the BBC.  “In this day and age promises are made and promises are broken and you lose your faith in human nature.

“This was a lovely gesture. Forty years is a long time – it must have been preying on his mind that he hadn’t repaid his debt.”

Mr Webb said that Mr Fenton, who now lives in Sydney, had explained in his note that he had come across the Briton’s address while looking through old papers, and decided to repay the debt while on a visit to London.
Mr Fenton left only an email address and Mr Webb said that though he had tried to contact the Aussie he had not yet heard back.
